Botox is a nonsurgical treatment used to limit lines and wrinkles on the face with injections of botulinum toxin A. The areas frequently treated with Botox include frown lines, crow’s-feet, and the forehead. The injections work by temporarily relaxing and paralyzing the facial muscles that cause wrinkles.

Other areas that can be improved by Botox include:

  • The jawline, to turn up the corners of the mouth
  • Saggy neck muscles, called platysma bands
  • Around the mouth to decrease signs of wrinkles, or “smoker’s lines”
  • The chin, to improve the appearance of a dimpled or cobblestone chin

The effects of Botox will last between 3 to 12 months. As muscle activity returns, lines and wrinkles will begin to reappear, and follow-up visits will be necessary for continued improvement. Over time, with regular Botox treatments, the wrinkles will become less prominent and fewer treatments needed, as the muscles have been trained to relax.
